In the field of plastic sheet extrusion lines, Polywood is one of the most advanced and sustainable solutions developed by BG Plast. It is a proprietary process, researched and refined over the years and protected by an industrial patent, that enables the production of high-performance sheets using organic fibers and thermoplastic polymers. This technology is fully aligned with the principles of the circular economy, aiming to repurpose recycled materials and tangibly reduce the environmental impact of production processes.

Polywood is created by combining wood sawdust and polymer to form a composite mixture that can be processed on specially engineered sheet extrusion lines. The goal is not only to produce a sustainable material but also to achieve mechanical, aesthetic and functional properties comparable to, and in many cases superior to, those of traditional plastics.

Polywood applications – organic fiber sheets

Extruded organic fiber sheets are used in numerous industrial sectors due to their versatility and the ability to modulate the final product’s properties. A particularly important area of application is the construction industry, where Polywood is used for paneling, cladding, and lightweight structural components. At the same time, the material is also well-suited for general and industrial packaging, serving as a valid alternative to conventional plastic materials.

A key sector is undoubtedly the automotive industry. Most car manufacturers use Polywood sheets for the production of door interiors, thanks to its ideal combination of lightness, strength, and workability. The material is excellent for compression thermoforming and can be laminated with a nonwoven layer, which provides a high-quality surface finish, both aesthetically and tactilely. This characteristic makes Polywood particularly popular for highly design-driven applications.

Technical specifications of BG Plast’s Polywood extrusion line

The extrusion line for organic fiber-reinforced sheets developed by BG Plast is designed to efficiently process a complex blend such as Polywood. The process involves the use of one or two co-extrusion extruders, configured according to the required characteristics of the final product. Downstream of the extrusion, a millimeter-precision calender is responsible for forming the sheet to the desired width and thickness, with consistent dimensional uniformity and surface quality.

The percentages of the mixture can vary significantly: they range from a 50% sawdust–50% polymer ratio up to compositions with 80% organic fibers and 20% polymer. This flexibility allows for the adjustment of the material’s stiffness, mechanical strength, and thermoforming behavior. The polymer used is generally recycled polypropylene, a significant economic and environmental advantage of the entire process.

From a plant engineering perspective, the line is fully classified as a sheet extrusion line with a calender, featuring specific design solutions for handling filled materials and for controlling process temperatures and pressures.
